2005-08 Community Safety Plan Summary

The Thanet Community Safety Plan for 2005-2008 entitled “from Audit to Action” was published in April 2005 and had strategic aims to reduce crime, improve feelings around crime, tackle anti-social behaviour and address substance misuse. The partnership looked to deliver projects and initiatives to tackle the strategic aims through dedicated themed sub groups that reported into a steering group that then in turn reported to the executive group. Key partners attended the appropriate sub group depending on the relevance to their role and they planned actions to address issues. Many actions were pledged within the plan and great deal has been achieved during this time to improve the Thanet area and make the place safer. Some of the key successes have been:

Reduce crime

Adhering to secure by design for all new builds in the area, improving security through the handy-van scheme and issuing of security packs to tenants as well as encouraging more neighbourhood watch schemes.

Improve feelings around crime

establishment of neighbourhood management boards and improved multi agency teams working on the ground.Tackle anti-social behaviour: Introduction of an ASB Hotline and employment of an ASB Co-ordinator. Enforcement campaigns against graffiti artists and use of fixed penalty notices for environmental crimes. Engaging youth projects and event co-ordination such as easter and summer blasts and the SAINTS project (safety awareness in thanet schools).

Address substance misuse:

Education and awareness amongst young people and support to services that provide treatment for drug users.

With all these excellent actions taking place crime has risen by 3.6% over the life of the plan and a revised approach is needed:
