Priority 2 - Domestic abuse

Identified in the strategic assessment and in a subsequent follow up report as being an issue of concern for Thanet, in particular in four key wards of Cliftonville West, Margate Central, Central Harbour and Dane Valley.

Aim

To raise awareness and reporting for incidents of domestic abuse. To tackle through enforcement & support the prevalence of these issues in high incidence areas and increase the rate that they are reported.

Objectives 2008-2011

  • Reduce repeat incidents of domestic abuse (NI032 Repeat incidents of domestic violence and County Agreement)
  • Reduce domestic abuse related murders (NI034 Domestic violence – murder)
  • Increase the reported incidents of domestic violence (TDC Corporate Plan)

Delivery of these objectives

Raise awareness

The partnership will work alongside the district’s Domestic Violence (DV) Forum to look at initiatives to raise awareness, increase reporting and improve detection rates.

Increase support

In partnership with the DV Forum, the community safety unit will look at provision of support for victims and will aim to provide any additional service that is practically possible to do so.

Tackle perpetrators

Break the cycle of re-offending by working on the worse cases of repeat domestic abusers through the Identified Prolific and Priority Offender Group.
